Week: 2
Date: 04.09.17
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I practised the chords that I was already comfortable playing on the guitar but not on the keyboard. This is because I own a guitar but not a keyboard. I also only practised the ones I was already more comfortable with because I was focused more on getting used to my timetable for the week and so did not think as much about practising. This meant that when I did practise, I wanted to not stress myself out more than needed for that week.
What I set out to achieve today:
I wanted to be able to play the chords with the class. I wanted to be able to transition between each chord smoothly and be able to play in time with the rest of the class.
How I was successful today:
I learnt the chords on the keyboard for the song. However, I did not play with the class and struggled to move between chords. I learnt how to form minor and major chords on the keyboard. For a major chord, you play the named note (So for a C Chord, a C), leave a gap of 3 notes (including sharps and flats), play the note after, leave a gap of 2 and play the note after that. For a minor chord, you do a similar thing, but swap the gap between notes around. So you would play the name note, leave a gap of 2 notes, play the note after that, leave a gap of 3 and play the note after that.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Practise the more challenging chords (e.g bar chords on guitar) so I can use them in songs I write
2. Move between chords more smoothly
3. Improve timing
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because moving between chords smoothly will help when writing songs. This is because it will make it easier to see how the chords fit together and help with overall flow of the piece. Learning more challenging chords will also help as it adds more variety to how I can play instruments. Improving timing will improve my progress because I will then be able to see where notes clash and how all the instruments interact with each other.
Week: 3
Date: 11.09.17
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I did not prepare for my piano lesson because I do not have access to a piano at home and did not know what I would be learning. I prepared for my practical lesson with the rest of the class by using garageband before so that I would know a small amount of how it works.
What I set out to achieve today:
In my piano lesson, I wanted to learn where the notes are found and how they work together. In the composition session, I wanted to understand more about how garageband worked.
How I was successful today:
I learnt where middle C is found on the piano. I also learnt how to read some sheet music (where C, D and E are written and the symbol that means to repeat a part of the music). As well as that I learnt how to play Queen Caroline.
I did not achieve anything in my composition session because I left to go to the Student Support Centre.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Learn how to read more sheet music
2. Learn more about how Garageband works
3. Learn how notes fit together and the effect different chords and notes have on the listener.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... learning the effects chords and notes have on the listener will help me choose what notes and chords I will use in a song. This is because I can use chords and notes to give the desired effect. Learning how garageband works will help because it would make it easier to find what I want to use and how I can use different settings to help create my song.
Week: 4
Date: 18.09.17
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I practised in my head the pattern of how to play the notes on the piano for Queen Caroline. This is because I do not have access to a piano at home but this way I could still learn the order of what to play. For the composition session, I did not prepare anymore than I had done the week before.
What I set out to achieve today:
I wanted to begin writing a song on Garageband. I also wanted to become more confident playing Queen Caroline on the piano.
How I was successful today:
I wrote a chord progression for my song and wrote a basic drum beat. I begun experimenting with other instruments on Garageband to see what I could do.

How I prepared for today's composition session:
I looked at some songs by bands and artists I admire and look at what sort of chords are often used.
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to add more depth to the first part of my song.
How I was successful today:
As the ipad that I previously used was not charged, I started writing my second song. I wrote the basic drum beat and chords. I also learnt a basic song structure, ABA, where you use one idea, use another contrasting idea and then go back to your first idea.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Write a contrasting chord pattern
2. Make sure tracks are in time
3. Add more depth to my song
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... writing a contrasting chord pattern will add more length to the song and keep the listener interested. The timing of the tracks is important to keep the song from sounding messy. Adding more depth to my song will keep the song more interesting.

Week: Half Term
Date: 20.10.17
What I plan to do this week:
Look at chords and common patterns used in songs that I listen to.
Practise playing guitar and explore with the different riffs and chord progressions that I can make and use in my songs.
How I was successful this week:
I researched tips for writing songs lyrics. I also looked at the chords used in many songs I listen to and found that Bm, Em, D, A and G were common chords. I also noticed that most songs had a main chord progression but in some parts of the song, they either replaced or added one or two chords for further verses or in the bridge.

Week: 9
Date: 30.10.17
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I remembered what chords are often used in songs that I listen to. I also listened to songs by bands I admire and made note of how they incorporate a mix of instruments to keep the song interesting to the listener.
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to add a guitar track and a bass line to my song to add more depth and keep the song interesting. I also wanted to add a contrasting chord progression
How I was successful today:
I added two guitar tracks, one that played chords for the main body of the song and another that played certain notes for the beginning of the song.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Keep everything on time
2. Write lyrics
3. Add a contrasting chord progression
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... keeping it in time will make the song sound less messy. The out of time notes are annoying to hear disrupt the song. I have not written any lyrics yet but writing them will give me a chance to have an idea of what I want the listener to feel and think of ways to do that with the chords, notes and way they are played. Adding a contrasting chord progression will add interest to the song and make it more enjoyable to listen to.
Week: 10
Date: 06.11.17
How I prepared for today's composition session: I listened to my song and made notes of what I wanted to change.
What I set out to achieve today: I wanted to make my song sound more in time and add a drum beat.

Week: 18
Date: 01.01.18
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I listened to a varied amount of musical styles.
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to start creating a song that I was proud of, using chords that did not clash.
How I was successful today:
I began with by playing around with the keyboard on GarageBand, picking out certain notes and the order they would be played in. When I had done so, I recorded the pattern and added more depth by having a different instrument playing the sequence as well. I then used the smart keyboard to play notes while listening to the notes recorded. I tested multiple chords in order to find what chords didn't clash with what notes and recorded a chord sequence from there. Finally, I used a similar note sequence with the flute to add a introduction to my song so far.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Add a drumbeat
2. Add a contrasting sequence and chord progression
3. Keep tracks in time with each other
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... adding a drumbeat and contrasting chord progression will add more depth to my song. By keeping the tracks in time with each other when recording, I will not need to spend as much time towards the end of the song, rerecording and tweaking parts to keep them in time but rather be able to spend that time making sure everything flows and there are no clashing notes.
Week: 19
Date: 08.01.17
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I prepared by thinking of the direction I wanted to take the song and how I could do this.
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to add depth to my song by adding different rhythms and melodies.
How I was successful today:
I added a different rhythm track in my song that still fitted with my chosen chords for part A. I also changed some of the instruments but made sure that they still fitted together so it sounded unified.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Add a drum track.
2. Add a contrasting chord progression.
3. Keep all the tracks in time.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... adding a contrasting chord progression will add more depth to my song. Keeping all the tracks in the same time will stop the song from sounding messy and I will get a better idea on whether the melodies, chords and notes clash. How I prepared for today's composition session:
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to add a contrasting chord progression.
How I was successful today:
I added a contrasting chord progression and built a set of notes as a foundation of what I shall write for the second part of my song. I also added a drum track which ties both sections of the song together.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:

Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Keep all tracks in time
2.Write lyrics
3.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... keeping all the tracks in time will stop the some from sounding messy and writing lyrics will add more depth to the song and if I do not use any lyrics in this song I can use them as starting points for my other songs.
Week: 22
Date: 29.01.18
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I chose some songs by artists I admire to research lyrics on.
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to research lyrics from songs I like and find patterns, techniques and themes I like in them.
How I was successful today:
I research multiple songs by different artists and bands and made notes on techniques, giving examples of where these were found. I found ideas such as making a major issue make seem minor, "bit of a nuisance really" - Listen To Your Friends and repeating parts of words and phrases, "lo-lo-lo-lobotomy, has taken all, all of me" - Peach (Lobotomy).
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Pick a theme for my lyrics
2. Using ideas from my notes, write down a few ideas for lines
3.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... picking an overall theme for the lyrical content of my song will stop the writing seem messy and unfocus. It will give the reader a clear idea of what I am saying. By writing down a few different ideas for lines in the song, I can play around with the order of the lines and make changes to words and phrases to make them fit better together and use only the lines that work together, leaving unfinished ideas for later use.

Picking a theme for my song will keep it more cohesive. Finally, developing my second song will help me progress in my songwriting and not fall behind so if I have trouble coming up with ideas next lesson I still have work I can do.
Week:26
Date:12.03.18
How I prepared for today's composition session:
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to develop my second song.

I completed my second song to a level I was pleased with.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Begin working on my third track
2. Decide the genre I want to write my third song in.
3.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... deciding a genre will help give me a direction to work when writing my third song and writing my third song will add to the total minutes of written music I have completed.
Week: 33
Date: 07.05.18
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I thought about what genre I wanted to write my third song in.
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to begin writing my third song and listen to my second song again to see if there was any elements I wanted to change after a week.
How I was successful today:
I wrote a chord progression for my song however I was unable to listen to my second song as the ipad I was using was not charged.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Add a drum track
2. Add a contrasting chord progression for a part B
3.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... Adding a drum track will help create a steady beat for my song to work with. Adding a contrasting chord progression for a part B before adding more depth will also help me understand where the song is headed, helping me to stick to a theme when adding more depth to the song.
Week: 34
Date: 14.05.18
How I prepared for today's composition session:
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to listen to my second song and transfer it and my first song to my phone so I could get feedback from my family. I also set out to continue working on my third song.
How I was successful today:
I transferred my songs to my phone, however, when I got home I could not play them. I did not get to work on my third song.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Add a drum track
2. Add a contrasting chord progression for a part B
3.

Week: Summer Half Term
Date: 28.04.18
How I prepared for today's composition session: I transferred my songs from the school's ipad to my phone so that I could work on them outside of class.
What I set out to achieve today: Over half term I planned to work on my compositions and develop my songs further. I also planned to have my family listen to my songs and give me feedback so I could improve them.
How I was successful today: I worked on my songs for a little bit, for my third song I added a chord sequence and changed the drum track to fit the sequence better. However, I did not work on my song for as long as I would have liked, due to distractions and other plans. I was not able to have my family listen to my songs because they were busy.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Add a contrasting chord progression
2. Get feedback on my songs (before the lesson) and act upon this feedback (in the lesson)
3.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... Adding a contrasting chord progression adds length and interest to my song. Receiving feedback enables me to understand what I can improve for my songs and keep this feedback in mind when working on other songs. This can help especially well if it is something such as clashing notes, so that I do not make the same mistake once more. Acting on it helps to improve my songs.
Week: 36
Date: 04.06.18
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I continued working on my composition from my phone. and add a contrasting chord progression.
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to work of some feedback on my songs
How I was successful today:
I changed the chord progression and drum track of my song in order to fit the theme of my song better. I also added parts of almost broken sounding melodies. I did this because I wanted to create an atmospheric sounding song and adding these broken up parts added to the sense of some unknown entity being in this location but not yet seen by the listener. I also added parts that were down one or two octaves, but quieter, to add tension without intruding too much on the song.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Get feedback on my songs (before the lesson) and act upon this feedback (in the lesson)
2. Add a contrasting chord progression
3.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because...Receiving feedback enables me to understand what I can improve for my songs and keep this feedback in mind when working on other songs. This can help especially well if it is something such as clashing notes, so that I do not make the same mistake once more. Acting on it helps to improve my songs. Adding a contrasting chord progression adds length and interest to my song. I could also use this in my third song to progress from music for one scene to the next.

Week: 1
Date: 03.09.18
How I prepared for today's composition session: I had written some lyrics.
What I set out to achieve today: I set out to make notes on educational children's songs, in order to try and find out what makes them effective.
How I was successful today: I made notes on children's songs and found repetition was commonly used, along with a steady, unchanging beat and often puns or jokes were littered in the song (such as "Velociraptors, veloci-rapping") I also began researching a topic to write a song about. I chose birds.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Continue research of birds
2. Work on writing the information into lyrics for a song
3.
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... researching birds will help makes sure all information included in the song is accurate and help make the song educational. I will need work on turning this information into lyrics so that I can begin writing a song.
Week: 3
Date: 17.09.18
How I prepared for today's composition session:
I prepared by having notes and ideas on several different topics, including birds and faeries. I also had notes on what I liked about other song lyrics.
What I set out to achieve today:
I set out to write more lyrics to possibly use in a song. I wanted to work on several different ideas as it would allow me to explore what worked best.
How I was successful today:
I was successful in that I wrote many different lyrics and general ideas for multiple themes. The idea with the most written down currently is faeries, however, I am not fond of a large part of this, as it feels too much like poetry.
Audio/Video Recording(s) of today's session (if available):
Targets for my next composition session:
1. Choose a theme or idea
2. Refine my lyrics
3. Start figuring out how the lyrics would sound and flow
Achieving these targets is important to the overall progress of my goals because... choosing a theme or idea will allow me to focus on one idea, speeding up the process now that I have had the chance to explore multiple. Refining my lyrics will ensure that they are the best I can make them, and figuring out how they will sound and flow is an important step in doing this.
